On the 22nd of January, at 4 pm, the Sé Catedral de Évora receives the Patriarchal Capella and the Capella de S. Vicente, under the direction of João Vaz, a New Year’s concert that has the support of the Casa de Bragança Foundation.

Motetes Marianos by João Rodrigues Esteves (1701-1752) will be presented in the first modern hearing, the rest of the program will include plainchant and organ pieces by Carlos Seixas.

João Rodrigues Esteves was a notable composer who, after having studied in Rome on the initiative of King João V, occupied important positions in the religious musical structures of Lisbon. Several Portuguese archives keep a total of about 100 compositions by him: masses, motets, hymns, lamentations, etc … The manuscripts are dated between 1719 and 1751.

The Basilica Sé de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, better known as Catedral de Évora or Sé de Évora, is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal and has no parallel in the rest of the country. Inside, there are many architectural and artistic elements of relevance, such as the choir stalls, the Renaissance organ, and pieces from the Museum of Sacred Art, among others. In the chancel, on the Gospel side, there is a historic organ by Pascoal Caetano Oldovini, executed in 1758.
