It is the usual invitation to culture that various spaces address to mark the International Youth Day. The occasion is celebrated this Thursday, August 12th, but these days, and until Saturday, there are museums, monuments and cultural spaces with open doors for those between 12 and 29 years old.
Until Saturday, the 14th, young people can whet their curiosity and enter the cultural world of Casa das Artes and Casa Allen, but also of Casa de Ramalde, which was once the scene of a dispute between a morgado and a count and which, later after having served as a residence, it housed the National Museum of Literature. In addition to these spaces under the management of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the North, there is the iconic Porto Cathedral: young people between 12 and 29 years old are entitled to free visits until the 14th.
Only on the 12th, which marks the International Youth Day, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage also promotes visits to all its monuments, museums and national palaces, free of charge for all young people. This includes the Soares dos Reis National Museum which, this Thursday, will allow the younger ones to discover its temporary exhibitions. The most recent is “Azul e Ouro – Esmaltes em Portugal, da época medieval à época moderna”, with 150 pieces from the 12th to the 19th centuries with application of enamel on metals, for the first time in Portugal.
At the Soares dos Reis Museum, you can also visit the drawings and poetry of “José Régio [Re]Visitações à torre de marfim”, the exhibition allusive to D. Pedro IV and the confrontations between liberals and absolutists, as well as the pieces from the Museum reserve, in the “Depositorium” exhibition.
The Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto is also associated with the commemoration, with free visits on Thursday, throughout the day, to the Botanical Garden of the University of Porto and the Ferreira da Silva Laboratory, in its Central Pole ( to the ropes).
The permanent exhibition of the Biodiversity Gallery – Centro Ciência Viva, at Casa Andresen, can also be visited on the 12th with a reduced access price.
International Youth Day is an initiative of the United Nations and is the result of the 1st World Conference of Ministers of Youth, held in Portugal, in 1998.
