Fado Festival Brings Carminho to Rio de Janeiro

The Fado Festival returns to Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with a tribute to the centenary of Carlos Paredes, one of the most important and influential Portuguese musicians of the 20th century, and the unmistakable voice of Carminho, in a unique show at Vivo Rio.

The festival will take place in Rio de Janeiro on November 21st and 23rd, bringing together a musical performance, conference, film screening, and exhibition.

For the past 15 years, the Festival has been the leading international showcase of fado: a unique experience that explores the musical genre in all its dimensions and artistic sensibilities, with a presence in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

It is also an opportunity for Portuguese artists to establish themselves worldwide, capturing the attention of diverse audiences.

As the festival’s director, Carminho has a long-standing relationship with Brazil. In her two-decade career, she has released seven studio albums and recorded alongside artists such as Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, and Milton Nascimento. In 2016, the singer received an invitation from the Jobim family to record Carminho canta Tom Jobim, with the band that accompanied the maestro during the last 10 years of his life. The 2023 album Portuguesa included her collaboration with Marcelo Camelo on “Levo o meu barco no mar.” Last year, she recorded a duet with Caetano on “Os Argonautas,” cementing her connection with Brazilian music.

With a new album under her belt, Carminho takes the Vivo Rio stage on November 23rd at 8:30 pm to present her latest work. Earlier, at 8 pm, guitarists André Dias and Hugo Gamboias will perform a tribute to Carlos Paredes, paying tribute to one of the greatest icons of Portuguese music.

In addition to the shows, the public will be able to visit Vivo Rio’s exhibition “Wings Over the World,” about the life and work of Carlos Paredes. The exhibition features photos and documents that illustrate the artist’s personal and professional trajectory. The opening will be on the 23rd at 7 pm.

The Festival’s program also includes two activities at the Royal Portuguese Reading Room. On November 21st at 4 pm, André Dias will present a lecture dedicated to Carlos Paredes’ mastery, exploring his innovative technique, his ability to move through music, and his impact on fado and Portuguese culture.

Another highlight is the screening of the documentary “Perpetual Movements,” by Edgar Pêra. It pays homage to the life and work of Carlos Paredes through testimonies, archival footage, and narration by the guitarist himself. His performance at the Carlos Alberto Auditorium in Porto in 1984 serves as the starting point for stories of imprisonment, resistance, and success, through accounts marked by simplicity and passion.
