Província Sonora Festival returns to celebrate music and nature

in July and September

The itinerant Província Sonora Festival started this year’s edition in March and combines classical and traditional music, and continues in July and September.

The heart of this Festival beats in Vieira do Minho from where it flows to Zamora (Spain), Macedo de Cavaleiros, Valtellina (Italy), Castelo Branco, and Faial, affirming the spirit of itinerancy, decentralization, and internationalization.
Daniel Bernardes, Filipe Quaresma e João Barradas
The public will be able to attend unique concerts by musicians such as António Rosado (piano) and Filipe Quaresma (cello): one of the most internationally renowned Portuguese pianists and one of the most outstanding cellists today, they present a repertoire that includes the rich sounds of music the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century; the Bando de Surunyo, an ensemble specialized in the interpretation of music from the 16th and 17th centuries; Lívia & Fred present the show “Nuvem rósea, chão de estrelas”. Internationally recognized for their choice of repertoire and arrangements of rare beauty, they explore the universe of serenades, a genre that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro and which gave birth to what would later become a popular urban song; Martín Sued, Argentinian composer, arranger, and bandoneonist. Born in Buenos Aires, he began his musical studies with the guitar and then went on to study bandoneon; Nuno Pinto and Bernardo Soares, who present a clarinet and piano recital and cover various musical styles, from baroque to contemporary, among others. All concerts are free admission.

With an original and innovative concept that started in March and runs until September 2023, this festival aims to unite customs and sounds on a musical journey. Allied with this concept and taking into account the surrounding nature, Sonora Province has a strong connection with the preservation of territory and environmental causes.

A festival that unites all those who participate in it. People who, despite not knowing each other, have something in common. Places that, although distant, are connected through the festival. Music is an element of social cohesion, awakening ecological awareness and promoting respect for the environment. It is a festival that aims to underline that “Província” encompasses any part of a country, with the exception of the capital.

The singularities of each geography, its customs, its foods, its people, and its crafts result. This is how Province Sonora is intended, a space for sharing, learning, and, above all, calling attention to other sounds, other forms of life, another respect for the surroundings. In an open and liquid format, in a living dialogue between the intricacies of two arts as old as man knows: Nature and Music.

The Província Sonora Festival is an initiative of Artway, a promoter, and company dedicated to cultural management, artistic management, record production, and publishing, especially classical music. The Festival was awarded the DGArtes Sustained Support Program.
