The nominees for the 78th edition of the Golden Globes reflect the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the film industry in 2020, with the postponement of premieres in the theater and the exhibition of more productions on streaming platforms or in the context of festivals.
Netflix has 22 nominations in the cinema categories and 20 in the television categories, followed by Amazon Studios with seven nominations in cinema and HBO in television.
David Fincher’s ‘Mank‘, produced and premiered on Netflix, is the most nominated film in this edition of the Golden Globes, in six categories, including Best Drama, Direction, Screenplay, and Drama actor, for Gary Oldman.
The film ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7′, by Aaron Sorkin, also shown on that platform, brings together five nominations for the Golden Globes, in Best Drama, Direction, Screenplay and male representation, with Sasha Baron Cohen.
For the best achievement award there is a prevalence of women, with Emerald Fennell, Regina King, and Chloé Zhao being nominated, to which are joined David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin.
For the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, Thomas Vinterberg named ‘Another round’, Edoardo Ponti’s ‘A life ahead of you’, Michael Chaves ‘La llorona’, Filippo Meneghetti’s ‘Deux‘ and ‘Minari‘, by Lee Isaac Chung.
For the category of Best Comedy or Musical, ‘Borat, the following film‘, ‘Hamilton‘, ‘Music‘, ‘Palm Springs’ and ‘The Prom’ compete.
In the production of television series and programs, the most nominated is ‘The Crown’ (Netflix), with six Golden Globes, including Best Drama Series. Actresses Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Gillian Anderson, Helena Bonham Carter and actor Josh O’Connor, from the cast of this series, are nominated.
The 78th edition of the Golden Globes is scheduled for February 28, will feature a presentation by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and the ceremony will be only virtual, given the epidemiological situation of the covid-19 in the United States.
