Nitin Sawhney, tour passes through Portugal in February
Acclaimed musician, composer and producer Nitin Sawhney is preparing to return to Portugal to present Identity, a new work that has received wide attention from the leading British press.

Illegal, one of the introductory singles from Identity, features the voice of the notorious former football player Gary Lineker, who recently found himself involved in a huge controversy after being dismissed from his post as a BBC commentator for expressing, on his social media, solidarity with refugees and immigrants. The BBC’s decision opened a huge crisis when other presenters resigned as a sign of solidarity. Sawhney, who admires Lineker’s views, had no doubts and invited the former footballer and TV star to participate in the single which, interestingly enough, was featured on BBC radio programming.
Nitin’s new album, Identity, follows 2021’s Immigrants, a record that received critical acclaim and great press support. “A seductive and persuasive look at the lives and human struggles that those in power would prefer you ignore and despise. Tune in,” wrote the renowned The Wire. Nitin Sawhney, regarding his new work, states:
“The world is full of opinions from people who try to tell us who we are. People become so loud in imposing their judgments and definitions on others that they often forget our common humanity. We are all human. We are all important …and as long as you’re not hurting anyone else, your own is the only opinion that counts in defining who you are. Identity, the album, is a love letter to who we all are.”
Since the release of the Mercury Prize-nominated Beyond Skin in 1999, Nitin has successfully navigated an artistic career that spans many genres, from electronica and hip-hop to jazz and neo-classical. This seminal album also merited a two-decade anniversary celebration that also passed through our country with great success. Among the various distinctions he has been honoured with, Nitin counts six honorary doctorates, the 2017 Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award and a decoration from the British crown. As a composer, Nitin is a Fellow of BAFTA and the Academy and is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the PRS Foundation, the UK’s leading charity funding new music and talent development.
