Portugal beat Luxembourg in qualifying for the World Cup 2022
After a 2-2 draw in Belgrade, Portugal went on to beat Luxembourg 3-1 on Matchday 3 of Group A qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
Fernando Santos made four changes to the eleven – entered Nuno Mendes, Renato Sanches, Rúben Neves and João Félix.
In the 30th minute, Luxembourg, who had won in Ireland last Saturday (1-0), took the lead, with a header from Gerson Rodrigues. The goal served to pique Portugal and the equalizer came over the break through Diogo Jota, with a header, after Pedro Neto crossed.
In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo, at 51 ’, scored the 103rd goal for the national team and stamped the turnaround, responding first to João Cancelo’s cross on the right side. At 80 ’, João Palhinha, after a corner kick by Pedro Neto, appeared at the first post to head to 3-1, signing the first goal of his career with the national team jersey.
Portugal and Serbia share the leadership of the group after three rounds, both with seven points. In the next round, on September 1, Portugal receives Ireland.
