Son Lux, Kevin Morby and Hinds confirmed at Super Bock Super Rock

On July 16, 17 and 18, Super Bock Super Rock will once again launch an invitation to discover new sounds in Meco, Sesimbra. Over the years, the Festival has been an eclectic house, and the three new confirmations reinforce this diversity: the North American singer Kevin Morby and the Spanish Hinds perform on the 16th, at the EDP Stage; and on the 18th, the Somersby Stage receives the boldness and experimentation of Son Lux at the 26th Super Bock Super Rock.

KEVIN MORBY

If there are doubts about the future of folk music, they dissipate when you hear Kevin Morby. Heir to Dylan and so many other American troubadours, Kevin Morby is part of a generation of folk singers that includes names like Angel Olsen or Kurt Vile. Before his solo career, the Texas musician had a good time in a group, indispensable for his artistic growth, first in the Woods and then in the duo The Babies, with Cassie Ramone. When he left Brooklyn and moved to Los Angeles, he recorded a collection of songs dedicated to New York City. Then he realized that his solo path was beginning to take shape and in 2013 Kevin Morby recorded what would be his first album under his own name: “Harlem River”. “Still Life”, the second album, was released the following year. By that time, audiences and critics were already surrendered to classic and always beautiful songs by Kevin Morby, but the acclaim only increased with the following albums: “Singing Saw” and “City Music”. In these years, publications like Mojo, Uncut or Pitchfork have not left him out of the lists of the best. His work ethic rests the fans: it is already known that you don’t have to wait long to hear new songs. And 2019 was the year of another record. “Oh My God” explores the spiritual concerns of Kevin Morby, who is increasingly mature, and in constant dialogue with references like Lou Reed or Bob Dylan (the gospel phase, in this case). Kevin Morby is today one of the best singers in the world and will return to Portugal in yet another edition of the Super Bock Super Rock – on July 16, on the EDP Stage.

SON LUX

Son Lux is the project of the interpreter, musician and composer Ryan Lott. Lott was the youngest of three brothers and spent his childhood walking around in the United States: from Colorado to Atlanta, passing through California, there was something that has always remained in the formation of this young man: his interest in music. Between jazz and pop, between guitar and piano, Ryan was forming his artistic sensibility, with dance also playing an important role in his life, alongside music. Shortly afterwards he started to appear as Son Lux – that is, his voice on nightly and ethereal melodies, inspired by the rhythms of hip hop, rock and even electronic music. After participating in the Festival of Faith & Music, where he acted alongside names like Emmylou Harris and Sufjan Stevens, the Son Lux project started to get more and more serious for Ryan. In 2008, he released his debut album, “At War with Walls and Mazes”, after four years of maturation. The following albums, “We Are Rising” (2011) and “Lanterns” (2013), confirmed all expectations regarding Son Lux’s ability to create dense, atmospheric and hard to forget pieces. After these first three albums and many concerts, what used to be a man’s place just became a band, with two more elements. Musicians Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia became part of the project and have already signed the group’s fourth album, “Bones”, released in 2015. More daring than ever, the album revealed a band on the right path, the path of risk and experimentation. After the edition of “Brighter Wounds” (2018), influenced by the death of a friend and the birth of Ryan Lott’s son, Son Lux continues to show its originality to the world. And Portugal is on the list of destinations for next summer – July 18th on the Somersby Stage of Super Bock Super Rock.

HINDS

The last decade has been marked by the resurgence of good garage bands in Spain. The Hinds made the difference and were most likely the most successful of all these projects. The band was born in Madrid in 2011, the result of the meeting between Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote, two young women tired of sitting around while their friends were making music. They took the guitars, learned the basics to make the first songs, and shortly afterwards they released the first demos in lo-fi mode on the Bandcamp platform. “Bamboo” and “Trippy” were those first two songs, released in 2014, and quickly caused a stir among the specialized press, receiving praise from publications such as NME and The Guardian newspaper. And it was difficult to remain indifferent to these melodic and loud songs, with a strong adolescent character and also a certain pop appeal. However, the group went on to quartet with the entries of bassist Ade Martín and drummer Amber Grimbergen. Upon the release of yet another single, “Barn”, they changed their name to Hinds, after signing Deers for a few years. The debut album, “Leave Me Alone” was released in January 2016. In the following months they gave concerts all over Europe and are preparing for another album. “I Don’t Run” featured the production of Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, Regina Spektor …) and it was more good proof of the freshness of this pop out of the garage, a little more polished than at the beginning. However, the third disc is already in the pipeline. The single “Riding Solo” is produced by Jenn Decilveo (Bat for Lashes, Anne-Marie) and reveals a band continuously looking to add something new to their music, without ever losing irreverence – the test will be given on 16 July, on the EDP Stage of Super Bock Super Rock.
