Swedish consortium unveils new wind car transporter

Conceived as part of a Swedish collaboration project, the wind car transporter has two names: Oceanbird and wind-Powered Car Carrier (wPCC). It was designed and built under the leadership of the design company Wallenius Marine, in conjunction with the maritime consulting firm SSPA and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Swedish consortium project, considered by Wallenius Marine as the largest sailing vessel in the world, promises to start a new era of sailing. In fact, the wind car transporter intends to cross the Atlantic Ocean with around 6,000 cars and, furthermore, reduce emissions by up to 90%.

A marine test was carried out earlier this year, using a smaller model of the Oceanbird. At that time, they experienced the ship’s tilt, as well as the entire engine and rudders. As such, the project is underway to open seas before the end of 2024.

In addition to moving through the energy collected from the wind, the automobile wind carrier has five sails, similar to an airplane wing. In addition, a transatlantic crossing will take about 12 days, while a ship with conventional cargo takes about seven.

Approximately 200 meters long and 40 meters wide, the Oceanbird will reach a height of 100 meters.
