It was among friends, family and fans, that Tape Junk & Pedro Branco presented their first album Bolero, released in February 2024, in a room that was too small for everyone who wanted to see and hear them.
Bolero is the first work of these two excellent musicians, released this year with the Discos Submarinos label, it is composed of 12 original songs written, composed and produced by the duo, Tape Junk, the artistic name of João Correia, who recalled that the album was created as a challenge, between the two musicians, in 2020, this being the first time they were performing it in public.
Due to the constraints, we experienced at that time, everything was done remotely, this is a journey through the best indie/folk produced in Portugal, and as you can read in the album’s presentation, “a set of stories based on real facts told with all the ingredients of a good blockbuster: broken hearts, a poignant scepticism, a hope drunk on the chance of our encounters and disagreements.“
A late afternoon, in a relaxed atmosphere, as if it were a rehearsal, a journey through melodies and rhythms that are both new and familiar, between joy, nostalgia, sadness and romance, in the small but cozy space of ADF in Pedrouços, In this performance they were joined on stage by Maria Ricardo on bass.
Pedro Branco is a guitarist from the outskirts with a suburban appearance but with a lot of outsider life in his fingers. He started in the garage, moved on to jazz and now finds himself in neutral territory, trying to find life between the bandit song and the straightforward lyrics that we can see in You Can’t Win, Charlie Brown or accompanying, Tiago Bettencourt or Marine.
Tape Junk is the real-life character of João Correia. His albums tell heady stories of invented cowboys and a life that he didn’t ask to happen, but that since he’s here he’s moving on unless he tries something between the fortuitous and self-proclaimed misery. Between the two there are collaborations and performances with people as diverse as Jorge Palma, Fausto Bordalo Dias, Lena D’Água, Tiago Bettencourt, Bruno Pernadas, and Benjamim among others.
