University of Coimbra promotes workshop to demonstrate the results of the Safeforest project
The Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI) and the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) will promote this Thursday, May 4, a workshop to demonstrate the results of the project “Safeforest – Semi-Autonomous Robotic System for Forest Cleaning and Fire Prevention”.
The presentation sessions will take place in the ISR auditorium, at Pólo II of the University of Coimbra, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and the field demonstrations will take place at the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM), between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
The presentation sessions will have a more technical nature about the robotic systems developed by the project and the importance of forest management as a measure to promote its resilience, which will take place in the morning. During the afternoon, the demonstration of the equipment on the ground will allow observing pre-programmed autonomous flights; aerial mapping of predefined regions; acquisition of data to generate traversability and vegetation maps; off-road navigation, and semi-autonomous vegetation removal.
The Safeforest project, led by a consortium made up of the companies Ingeniarius and SILVAPOR, in collaboration with ADAI and the ISR of the FCTUC, as well as with the American Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), aims to develop innovative technologies for the prevention of forest fires, with an emphasis on mobile robotics.
The proposed solution involves the use of terrestrial platforms (robots) and semi-autonomous aerial platforms (drones) to carry out land cleaning missions, aiming to remove redundant vegetation and achieve the desired cleaning. The operation of both prototypes will be demonstrated on-site.
According to the consortium, the results of this project bring several benefits in terms of preventing and fighting forest fires, namely autonomous navigation in forests, improved artificial perception, and efficient management of the robotic system.
The Safeforest project is co-financed by FEDER, COMPETE 2020, the CENTRO2020 Program, and by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal).
