João Sousa descends to the 100th place in the ATP ranking
Portuguese tennis player João Sousa dropped two positions in the ATP ranking, released today, and is in the 100th place on the table led by Serbian Novak Djokovic, who equaled the record of 310 weeks at the top of Swiss Roger Federer.
The Vimaranense, who failed the Australian Open, because he accused the new coronavirus positive on the eve of traveling to Melbourne, lost in the first round of the ATP 250 in Cordoba last week, and was unable to avoid descending to the lowest ranking since July 2013, when he left the 102nd position to appear in the 93rd position.
While João Sousa, 31 years old, competes this week for the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, to try to reverse the downward trend, world number one Novak Djokovic equaled today Federer’s 310 weeks in the lead of the ATP ranking, a maximum he has held since 2012, when he overcame the 286 weeks of the North American Pete Sampras.
In the same way that the 33-year-old Serbian remains world number one, the ‘top-10’ has not undergone any change, with Rafael Nadal remaining in second place and Russian Daniil Madevedev, runner-up in the Australian Open, in third place.
Among the Portuguese, Frederico Silva was the only one to move up the world hierarchy, ascending five places, to appear in the 179th position, after reaching the quarter-finals in the Nur-Sultan 1 ATP Challenger 125.
Pedro Sousa, after being defeated in his debut at the ATP 250 in Córdoba, went down to 110th place, just as João Domingues fell to 188th place and Gonçalo Oliveira went down to 296th place in the world ranking.
