The film “Gladiator II” premieres in Portugal on November 14, and today the single “Strength and Honor” was revealed. On November 15, 2024, the soundtrack of the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator”.

“Gladiator II: Music From The Motion Picture” by composer Harry Gregson-Williams features an epic orchestral soundtrack, composed of more than 100 musicians and singers from around the world, meticulously crafted to accompany the new film starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, with Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. The soundtrack also includes the timeless hit “Now We Are Free,” composed by Hans Zimmer for the original “Gladiator” film nearly 25 years ago and featuring singer Lisa Gerrard. Listen HERE to the single “Strength and Honor” from the new soundtrack of “Gladiator II” by Harry Gregson-Williams.

Harry Gregson-Williams says about the soundtrack of “Gladiator II”: “My approach to the soundtrack of ‘Gladiator II’ was to create music that embodied the spiritual essence of the original film while creating a new sound for Lucius and the other main characters we encounter (such as Acacius – strong and bold – and Macrinus – scheming and calculating). Thematically, Lucius needed a very versatile melody – he is the centre of the film, and his love, leadership, anger, and need for revenge had to be reflected in the music. In addition to the large orchestra and choirs that this epic story required, I felt the need to add some unique instrumentation to help shape the narrative. Whether it was the sliding and uncomfortable strings of a baritone violin or the electric cello to represent the intrigues and conspiracies of Macrinus, or the primitive horns that helped transport us back to Ancient Rome, the special instrumentation helped bring a sense of uniqueness to these characters and places. From specially recorded voices representing the Numidian fighters to the esoteric and supernatural voice of Lisa Gerrard, all these different and unique sounds and colours were necessary to tell the story of Lucius.”

To create the sound world of “Gladiator II,” Gregson-Williams took a truly international approach; he worked with musicians from all over the world to bring his extraordinary score to life. Having initially written the main musical themes in his studio in Los Angeles, the composer then travelled to northern Spain to record some unusual historical instruments (such as the Carnyx and the Iberian Horn) with performer Abraham Cupeiro, to bring to life the sound of Ancient Rome. In other parts of Europe, he recorded soloists, including singers Lisa Gerrard, Grace Davidson, Lior Attar, Antonio Lizana, Ejigayehu ‘Gigi’ Shibabaw, and Ayo Adeyemi, as well as instrumentalists Richard Harvey (Ney and Ancient Flutes), Hugh Marsh (electric violin), Martin Tillman (electric cello), Hamid Saeidi (Kantele/Santur), and Loga Ramin Torkian (GuitarViol).

Gregson-Williams returned to his home country, the United Kingdom, to record the main score with a huge orchestra, the UK’s leading independent choir, The Bach Choir, and the internationally acclaimed Viol Consort Fretwork at Abbey Road Studios – where he had previously recorded many scores (including those for “The Martian,” “Shrek,” and “The Chronicles of Narnia”). During the recording, conducted by Gregson-Williams, Hans Zimmer appeared via video to listen to the new score being performed.

Now nearly 25 years on, Zimmer’s original soundtrack, “Gladiator,” remains one of the most cherished and enduring soundtracks. The main song “Now We Are Free” reappears in the new film and on the soundtrack – providing the perfect link between the two musical worlds.

Harry Gregson-Williams brings his unique compositional voice to “Gladiator II” – embracing the epic moments on screen with monumental musical forces while accompanying intimate moments with beautiful harmonies – this is a soundtrack that provides an exciting counterpart to Ridley Scott’s remarkable new film. “Gladiator II” marks the seventh collaboration between Gregson-Williams and Ridley Scott, with Gregson-Williams having composed original scores for “The Martian,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Last Duel,” and “House of Gucci,” as well as themes for “Prometheus” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.”
