Those who came to Rio de Janeiro for Carnival stayed here, on average, from seven to eleven days. This helped to inject in the local economy 3.78 billion reais in revenues, which moved the commerce and services sectors,” according to the balance sheet released by the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro.

The party ended last Sunday with parades of blocks through the streets. The results obtained in the Carnival of 2019 were qualified by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, an “absolute record“.

During Carnival, the most favoured sectors were commerce and services, which contributed to mark this 26% growth in revenues compared to the same period last year.

The organization of the most important popular party in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil had an investment of 72.4 million reais (about 18 million euros), of which 41 million reais (12.2 million euros) came from contributions of private companies.

The celebration of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, which last year was marked by insecurity, had this year a favourable perception of the participants.

According to a study commissioned by the city government, 63.2% of foreign visitors who enjoyed the party described how good or excellent public safety and 98.4% expressed satisfaction and willingness to recommend the event to others, an index up from 95% last year.

The city’s security was strengthened with face recognition cameras and police checks that mobilized about 9,000 security guards at the Sambadrome and on the streets.

The Municipal Guard reported that it carried out 26 arrests in 18 crimes, including robbery, robbery, threat, damage, disobedience and drug trafficking in seven police stations. Most of the criminal records occurred during street block parades.

The City of Rio de Janeiro also pointed out that there was a 16.4% drop in the number of attendances in the 11 posts of the Municipal Health Department due to the lower heat and more responsible action by the population.

The local authority added that it provided prehospital care to 2,842 people, less than the 3,400 visits recorded last year.
