Tomorrow, Friday, at 8am, the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro begins, the 5th and final stage of the MEO Surf League, the 1st division of Portuguese surfing, which runs until Sunday at Lagido beach, in Peniche.
Everything is ready for three days of great action with the presence of the national surfing elite, previewing an exciting event that will decide the male and female national champions.
Scheduled test sequence – 1st day of competition (subject to change)
– Call – 8:00 am
– Trial phase – men (4 heats)
– Round 1 Men (16 heats)
– Round 1 Women (6 heats)
Francisco Morgado – Race Director
“We are going to have a competition with favourable conditions both in terms of waves and wind for Praia do Lagido. Unfortunately, the weather will remain unstable, but what matters are the conditions in the water, which promise to be very suitable for finding the best in Portugal.”
The current national champion, Guilherme Ribeiro, arrives in Peniche at the front of the Go Chill ranking, being one of four candidates for the title along with Joaquim Chaves, Afonso Antunes and Francisco Ordonhas. On the women’s side, the title will be contested by the 2021 national champion, Francisca Veselko, and by Gabriela Dinis who this year won the Pro Júnior national title.
Men’s National Title Scenarios
– Joaquim Chaves secures the title with a 3rd place (since the four best results of the year count)
– If Joaquim Chaves reaches 9th place, Guilherme Ribeiro will only be included if he wins
– From the moment Joaquim Chaves scores, Afonso Antunes and Francisco Ordonhas are out of the race for the national title
Women’s National Title Scenarios
– Francisca Veselko secures the title with 5th place
– Gabriela Dinis only enters the national title count if she wins
With regard to local surfers from Peniche, the presence of Guilherme Fonseca and Matias Canhoto represents the present and future of competitive surfing in the Capital of Wave.
Guilherme Fonseca – Current Top 13 of the MEO Surf 2023 League and local surfer from Peniche
“I’m going without high expectations because I no longer have a chance of becoming national champion, but I’m going to enjoy the moment and try to have as much fun as possible. I’ve been training a lot both in the water and in the gym. I’m prepared to surf this big wave and it will be a pleasure to compete at home. I hope the championship ends with extreme conditions as it will provide good waves. Lagido is a perfect wave to take the test. According to forecasts, there will be a lot of swell with the south wind which is offshore there. We will have good conditions and opportunities for good surfing. I think that with these predictions there was no better place in Portugal to do this race. It’s a wave that I feel very comfortable on because, basically, I was born surfing there. It’s a wave that fits well with my backside surfing, I have good boards and a good surfing rhythm.”
Matias Canhoto – 3rd place in the 1st stage of the MEO Surf 2023 League and local surfer from Peniche
“It’s always great to have a stage of the MEO Surf League taking place in Peniche, with high waves. After the 1st stage in Figueira da Foz in which I reached 3rd place, unfortunately, I got injured and was unable to do the remaining stages. Fortunately, I managed to recover later, I achieved some junior goals at the international level in this last stage, I will try to do my best surfing, without pressure. Many thanks to ANS.”
