Designer Tom Dixon came to Lisbon to open the exhibition and create a potential prototype

Briton, a global reference in the world of lighting, furniture and decoration, was visiting Portugal in the last week of September, to open an exhibition designed by Area.

The renowned British industrial designer Tom Dixon, known worldwide for his pieces in the fields of lighting, furniture and accessories, visited Lisbon for two days, in the last week of September, where he opened an exhibition with a selection of his latest creations.

In an exclusive event designed especially for this purpose by Area, the brand’s representative in our country, Tom Dixon gave a presentation of the new products and, with a welding machine in hand, developed a potential prototype of a lamp, in a surprise performance for the guests of the occasion, made up mainly of professionals in the sector.

The exhibition will remain on view at the Area headquarters, in the Amoreiras area, until October 26th.

Some of the new products launched were portable lamps that run on rechargeable batteries, inspired by the iconic Melt, Bell, Stone and Cone, as well as the best-selling Fat chairs, now available in hundreds of colours and fabrics.

Tom Dixon’s professional connection to Portugal is not new. In addition to collaborating with Area for a long time, the designer has visited the national territory more than once, and seen several of his pieces produced in Portugal. A recent example was “The Cork” line, launched in 2020, a collection of cork and polyurethane furniture, purposely carbonized to have a rocky and rustic appearance.

Established in 2002, the brand currently employs more than 100 people all over the world and is represented in around 90 countries. It also has work platforms in cities such as London, Milan, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Hangzhou.

The brand displays its own identity and highlights a contemporary aesthetic with British roots, with its products being internationally recognized for their pioneering use of materials and techniques.

Tom Dixon became known creatively from an early age for his irreverence, having created in the mid-80s a line of furniture with welded metal salvages. In collaboration with Italian design giant Cappellini, in the 90s, he created the globally acclaimed S-Chair. In 2001 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE), for his service to the design of his country, this being just one of the distinctions he boasts in his professional career.

‘Beat’, ‘Melt’, ‘S-Chair’ and ‘Wingback’ are some of Tom Dixon’s best-known and most commercially successful lines, to the point that they are part of the permanent collection of several internationally famous museums, such as London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, the Parisian Center Pompidou and the MOMA in New York. More recently, the Fat Chair, Spring lamps and Swirl accessories have cemented the creative status in the world of global industrial design.
