Fabio Jakobsen wins inaugural round of the Algarve Tour

Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step) is the first leader of the 45th edition of the Tour of the Algarve after having won the inaugural sprint between Portimão and Lagos today, in the distance of 199.1 kilometers.

Jakobsen completed the longest run with unofficial time of 4: 52.59 hours, imposing on goal to Frenchman Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) and German Pascal Ackermann (BORA-hansgrohe), second and third classified, respectively, that finished with the same time as the winner.

The opening stage was marked by a crash seven kilometers short of the arrival, which involved several cyclists, which delayed, among others, the German John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma), two of the main ‘ sprinters’ of the squad.

The second stage of the 2019 Algarve Tour takes place on Thursday, extending 187.4 kilometers, between Almodôvar and Foia (900 m), the highest point in the Algarve, in the Monchique the goal coincides with first-rate mountain counts.
