Youth Foundation launches the 29th edition of the National Competition for Young Scientists

Students in basic, secondary and first year of higher education, aged between 15 and 20 years old, can submit applications until 28 June, and the first five prizes receive around € 5,000.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ast Sunday, National Day of Scientists in honor of José Mariano Gago, the Youth Foundation launched the 29º Concurso Nacional para Jovens Cientistas, the largest national competition in this segment.

Until June 28, 2021, applications are open for the 29th edition of the National Competition for Young Scientists. There are prizes and also the opportunity to participate in international competitions with the best projects in the following categories: Biology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Physics, Informatics / Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry and Bioeconomics.

Ciência Viva – National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, is responsible for appointing the jury that is responsible for evaluating and selecting projects. The jury will include professors and researchers of recognized merit from the different scientific areas involved, in addition to representatives from the Youth Foundation, Ciência Viva and the Portuguese Environment Agency and the General Directorate of Education.

Each school can submit a maximum of 10 projects and the submission of works must be done by June 28, 2021. This year, the 15th National Science Exhibition will be at the end of September and, according to the evolution of the pandemic, it should happen in virtual or hybrid format.

This edition is organized by the Youth Foundation in collaboration with Ciência Viva – National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture.

Science and Technology is currently one of the most important areas in employability and, for this reason, the National Competition for Young Scientists is a reference in the history of the Youth Foundation. Throughout its 28 editions, it received more than 1,900 projects from 4,600 young people, in collaboration with 1,200 teachers from 1,000 schools and having guaranteed the opportunity to participate in more than 250 young people in international competitions. This year, in the first virtual event so far, two groups of young Portuguese students won the 1st and 3rd prizes at the Virtual Forum “Step into the Future” 2021 in Russia.
