The Ideal Clube de Fado, in the city of Porto, presents Portuguese Guitar Concerts: the initiative opened with a full house on the 24th of July with Ângelo Freire on the Portuguese guitar and Carlos Manuel Proença on the fado viola, and continues until the end of the year.
On the 17th of August, it will be the turn of Henrique Fraga, who will present a concert dedicated to the legacy of the Paredes family with works for Coimbra guitar by Gonçalo Paredes, Artur Paredes, and Carlos Paredes. Henrique Fraga is a guitarist trained in the academic world of Coimbra, where he made his way through the history of the Portuguese guitar. Soloist with a strong creative impulse, his work is born in the transgenerational echo of this instrument to assert itself in a unique encounter between tradition and evolution.
On the 21st of September, Ideal Clube de Fado receives Paulo Soares, one of the greatest authorities on the style of Coimbra; on the 18th of October it is Luís Coelho’s turn, in a piano duo, with his own compositions; on the 23rd of November, Miguel Amaral will perform, with an eclectic repertoire; and on December 14 it ends with Hugo Reis, who presents “Tateabilidade”, a cycle of works by him, developed through the act of experimentation with the Portuguese guitar, electronics, objects and the sense of touch, which proposes a less usual meaning of the Portuguese guitar in regarding its use.
Tickets cost €15 and can be purchased on the website – www.fado.club.
The concerts are at 21:00 and a glass of port wine will be offered.
At Ideal Clube de Fado, the public can also attend poetry sessions sung in Traditional Fado, every last Wednesday of each month. Anyone who writes poetry can participate. Admission is free, and the objective is to recover the vital relationship between poets and fado singers. In these sessions, the way in which poetry relates to Traditional Fado is shared, and those who bring poems instead of reciting them, listen to Fado singers singing them.
Of note is the partnership between Ideal Clube de Fado and the International Festival, SEA and YOU – Sound ExchAnges and YOU: an itinerant music festival that promotes intercultural dialogue. It will take place between Naples, Granada, and Porto. The first concert takes place on the 11th of November in Granada, Spain, and will fuse the traditions of Flamenco, Fado, and Neapolitan Song into an unforgettable show.
This Festival intends to be an instrument of cultural approximation of Mediterranean and European peoples to highlight the richness of the different forms of traditional music with a common cultural heritage. The partners are associations that value the traditional music of their regions. A program of 3 concerts will be organized by the 3 partners in their cities where artists will be cross-hosted and where other artists will also be invited.
The Ideal Clube de Fado, located at number 32, Rua do Ateneu Comercial do Porto, is distinguished by its dedication to the preservation and dissemination of Traditional Fado. This style of fado, considered by some as pure fado, by others as the most authentic tradition of classic fado, is characterized by poetic freedom and musical improvisation. They are the only professional project in the country with this orientation, that of singing only Traditional Fado.
