Nuno Guerreiro | 1972-2025

Nuno Guerreiro, an unmistakable voice in Portuguese music, passed away today.

In a note of condolence that we received from the Municipality of Loulé, where the singer was from, he died this Thursday, a victim of a sudden illness.

“A fantastic artist, with an unmistakable and unique voice, a Loulé native in heart and soul who, even in the limelight, never forgot his homeland. The death of Nuno Guerreiro leaves our community much poorer. Loulé is in mourning, the national artistic world is in mourning! Rest in peace, Nuno”, says the president of the Municipality, Vítor Aleixo.

Nuno Guerreiro was born on September 5, 1972, in Loulé. Possessing a countertenor vocal register – unique in the Portuguese and even worldwide pop scene – he had a rich career marked by soul and rhythm & blues sounds.

She started singing at a very young age, with fado singer Amália Rodrigues as her main influence.

At the age of 16, he went to Lisbon to attend the Conservatory Dance School. During the following years, he cultivated the art of dance until fate brought him across guitarist Carlos Paredes.

He participated in the musician’s shows in 1992, in Lisbon and Porto.
He joined the Ala dos Namorados as lead vocalist at the invitation of musicians Manuel Paulo and João Gil (ex-Trovante), and it was in this group that he achieved stardom. In order to cultivate his countertenor voice, he attended singing lessons with Maria Cristina Castro, one of the best Portuguese soprano singers.

Outside of the scope of the Valentine’s Wing, he has occasionally collaborated with “D.I.V.A.” by Natália Casanova and with former Madredeus Rodrigo Leão
In 1999, Nuno Guerreiro recorded the album “Carta de Amor”, at the invitation of the Japanese record label EMI, a disc composed of classics of Anglo-American popular music, such as “When The Saints Go Marchin In”, “Amazing Grace” and “Greensleeves”. It also featured the interpretation of “Perdidamente”, a poem by Florbela Espanca, set to music by João Gil for a great hit by Trovante.

In 2002 he recorded the album “Tento Saber”, produced by Gonçalo Pereira. Rui Veloso plays guitar in “3 Minute Song”, a song by him and Carlos Tê. It also includes “Por Amor, Por Alguém” (a song by Sara Tavares), “Tu Podes Dar” (by Lúcia Moniz and Pedro Campos) and a version of “Careless Whisper” by George Michael.

Between his solo career, with Ala dos Namorados and other projects in which he was involved, Nuno Guerreiro performed shows all over the country and various parts of the globe.

In 1997, he was awarded the Municipal Merit Medal – Gold Level.

This year, on March 30th and 31st, he performed two full house concerts at the Cineteatro Louletano, with the band “Mau Feitio” featuring Ricardo J. Martins on Portuguese guitar, João Palma on accordion, Vítor Bacalhau on classical guitar and Vasco Moura on electric bass. The concerts, in homage to Carlos Paredes, were recorded live on video, for future DVD release, and also featured the participation of the Philharmonic Band of the Sociedade Recreativa Artistas de Minerva.
It was precisely with this Philharmonic that Nuno Guerreiro would give a concert at the MED Festival, at the end of June, in a show paying tribute to the Cape Verdean artist Sara Tavares, with whom Nuno Guerreiro maintained a strong artistic and personal connection.

The sublime interpretation of the “Hymn of the Sovereign Mother” by Nuno Guerreiro will remain forever in the memory of the people of Loulé.

It is worth mentioning that Nuno Guerreiro has been part of the Cineteatro Louletano team for about a year, with great professionalism, pride and dedication.

The Municipality of Loulé will find the appropriate way to perpetuate the memory of Nuno Guerreiro, paying him due tribute as a unique artist and human being, so that future generations can be inspired by him.

To the bereaved family and friends, the Municipality of Loulé expresses its deepest condolences at this time of enormous pain and sorrow!
