From 7 to 29 December, the historic Coliseu dos Recreios will once again open its doors to one of the city’s most cherished traditions: the Christmas Circus.
This show, which combines traditional circus performances with a contemporary twist, is much more than entertainment – it’s an essential part of Lisbon’s Christmas, bringing together generations of families around the same magic.

A Heritage of History and Emotion
The Coliseu dos Recreios, inaugurated on August 14, 1890, is a landmark in Portuguese architecture. Its iconic iron dome, with more than 100 tons and an impressive diameter of 48.68 meters, represents the innovation and ingenuity of the time. This iconic space received its first circus show on October 18, 1890, with an Equestrian and Acrobatic Company that charmed the audience with juggling acts, equilibrists and even trained elephants.
Since then, the circus has been an integral part of the Coliseu’s identity, evolving over the years to embrace new forms of art while maintaining the essence of tradition.
