Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland (2-1)
Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland (2-1), in the fourth round of Group A qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. It was the third victory of the National Team in this phase.
After John Egan (45’), following the corner, threatened a surprise at the Estádio do Algarve, Cristiano Ronaldo stopped Portugal’s humiliation.
The captain, who had allowed Bazunu’s defense on a penalty, re-established equality (89′) with a goal that made the history of world football – he was the 110th with the jersey of the corners, making Ronaldo the best scorer ever at the level of selections – and scored twice at 90+6′, again with his head.
With this result, Portugal isolated itself at the top of the group with 10 points, three more than Serbia (one game less). The Republic of Ireland is still without points at this stage.
