Sintra distinguished as one of the 100 sustainable destinations in the world

Sintra once again makes the Top 100 Stories list by Green Destinations by winning in the category “culture and tradition,” with the Colares Wine Route as one of the 100 best practices in sustainable tourism.

This Top 100 selects destinations that promote sustainability and different tourism, creating memorable stories. Quality, replicability, innovation, and the quality of what is sustainable are factors that are part of these stories to be shared.

According to the organization, “The vineyards of Colares have unique characteristics, as they are planted in sand and cultivated sustainably and in harmony with the natural environment. The vineyard is a crucial element for the municipality of Sintra, both from an economic and cultural perspective. The production of high-quality wines, especially Ramisco wine, a long-lived and structured red, and Malvasia de Colares, an aromatic white, both grape varieties having a unique character, given the particularity of the soils where they are cultivated.”

The success of Colares wines is the result of a coordinated effort that combines the preservation of traditions with innovation and adaptation to modern conditions. The unique soil, the influence of the maritime climate, legal protection through the DOC, and effective marketing and tourism strategies have been key to ensuring that Colares wines continue to be recognized and appreciated worldwide, which were the crucial factors for Sintra to win in the “culture and tradition” category.

The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition has taken place annually since 2014, celebrating and promoting 100 destinations and companies as inspiring examples of Sustainable Tourism for other destinations, tour operators, and visitors.

The contest selects 100 stories of Sustainable Tourism through an open competition. The stories are judged in terms of effectiveness, innovation, and transferability.
