The Portuguese João Sousa and the Argentine Leonardo Mayer have advanced to the third round of the Australian Open tennis pair after beating their opponents in two sets.

Playing the ninth grand slam tournament next to Mayer, Portuguese tennis number one, João Sousa, is the 46th in the ATP peer ranking and the 44th in singles.

On Thursday, Vimaranense, the only Portuguese still in competition at Melbourne Park, also advanced to the third round in the singles tournament after a five-set battle in more than four hours.

In the next round, the Portuguese player will face the Japanese Kei Nishikori, ninth of the world hierarchy.
