Winners X National Contest of Homemade and Craft Beers
After a long weekend of tastings on the 10th and 11th, at Fábrica de Cervejas Portuense, in the city of Porto, the best national home brewers are already known, and what was considered the best Portuguese craft beer sold during 2022.
In the year of its 10th anniversary, the National Contest of Homemade and Craft Beers became part, for the first time, in addition to the competition dedicated to homebrewers (homebrewers), a new competition, always in blind and exempt tasting, destined to choose the Best Portuguese Craft Beer for sale in 2022, for which the organization of the contest had the participation of the best national craft beer brands. It was an edition that had a record number of participants, with more than 160 beers evaluated by a panel of judges that included brewers, specialists in sensory analysis, and certified brewing judges, a very positive sign of the dynamism of the market and craft beer in Portugal.
And the Best Portuguese Craft Beer is…
In terms of homebrewers, the winners were, in the “Lager” category, Nobilis, a Czech Dark Lager made by Miguel Pereira; in the “Ale”, the winning beer was Luís Leonardo’s, called Caravela, in the English Porter style; in the “Experimental” category, Filipe Alves won with Beetlejuice; and, in the particular category “Grape Ale”, the triumph belonged to Vítor Silva. The prize for each of these brewers will be to pass on, during 2023, each of the winning recipes in the installations of recognized Portuguese craft beer brands, namely in the structures of Musa, Nortada, Sovina, and BeerHouse.
In the competition aimed at national craft beers being marketed, in the “Lager” category, Mystic Brew, by Senescal, a brand from Castro Marim, won, which presented a Dunkles Bock with organic figs dried in the sun. As for the “Ale”, the winner was the 2022 edition of Murder, an Imperial Stout matured in bourbon barrels, from Lisbon’s Dois Corvos, a beer that was also considered the best in the competition and, consequently, the Best Portuguese Craft Beer of 2022!

The 2023 edition is already being prepared, but in the meantime, it’s time to try some of the winning craft beers, and the complete classification can be consulted on the Contest’s Facebook page.
The National Contest of Homemade and Craft Beers is an event organized by Cervejas do Mundo – Fórum (a Facebook group with more than 10 thousand members, the most important and oldest in the sector at the national level), and certified by the Beer Judge Certification Program, organization beer judges, created in 1985, present in more than 50 countries.
In addition to being an annual occasion for the national brewing community to get together, the National Contest of Homemade and Craft Beers is also an opportunity for brewers, whether amateurs or professionals, to pick up their pots and give rise to experiments and demonstrations of their quality and mastery. The contest also seeks to be a leverage moment for new projects, encouraging them to leave the garage at home and become, who knows, a business and the next craft beer brand featured in the best craft beer stores from Portugal (and, who knows, from the world!).
