based on the novel by José Saramago, a show by Hélder Mateus da Costa

A Barraca Theater | 27 MARCH 9:30 PM | Extraordinary Session
World Theater Day at BARRACA

A Barraca celebrates the Theater with “1936 – The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis” in an adaptation and staging by Hélder Mateus da Costa of the celebrated novel by our Nobel laureate José Saramago.

A masterful interpretation by Ruben Garcia and Adérito Lopes accompanied by the transformative virtuosity of Sérgio Moras at the head of the Barraca cast under the scrutiny of the meticulous artistic direction of Maria do Céu Guerra.

As A Barraca was not included – despite being eligible – in the last competition for bi-annual support from DGArtes, we regret but we will not be able to do without the public’s support when purchasing Tickets.

Long live the Theater!!!

Synopsis

1936, THE YEAR OF RICARDO REIS’ DEATH

based on the novel by José Saramago, a show by Hélder Mateus da Costa.

This beautiful and profound novel invites a very exciting dramaturgical reflection.
It begins with the invention of the meeting between Fernando Pessoa, now deceased, and the heteronym Ricardo Reis, with real cases of sex and passion, also in a deaf, false and heavy atmosphere, and because it speaks with humour about the relationship between creator / “work/figure/character”.

Furthermore, it is defined as the main protagonist of the work, the YEAR in which the plot develops.
And what a YEAR!!??

1936! Some data…Commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the military coup of May 28, 1926, which was the kick-off for the beginning of fascism, specialization of the political police with the support of the Gestapo, foundation of Mocidade Portuguesa, Legião Portuguesa and concentration camp of the Tarrafal… Mussolini invades Ethiopia with the complicit silence of the European royal houses, Hitler intensifies the attack on the Jews, the beginning of the civil war in Spain…
In today’s times, of fragile memory, civic and ethical minority, fundamentalism, militarism, and financial imperialism generating universal misery and horror, rebirthing the dark Nazi-fascist phoenix, here is a work that demonstrates that social upheavals have never – unfortunately – come to an end. “thing” dated and of unnecessary archaeological interest.
