In a ceremony held in the Estoril Casino Auditorium

In a solemn ceremony, the Estoril Casino Auditorium hosted the presentation of the Vasco Graça Moura Prize – Cultural Citizenship to Graça Morais, and the Fernando Namora and Agustina Bessa-Luis Literary Prizes, established by Estoril Sol, and referring to 2022, respectively, to Teresa Veiga and Marco Pacheco. Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, President of the Estoril Sol Awards Jury, presided over this important event, attended by numerous personalities linked to Literature and the Arts.

In framing the winning works, Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins analyzed the novel “O Senhor d` Além”, by Teresa Veiga, winner of the Fernando Namora Prize, highlighting that “the author’s stylistic sobriety is exemplary as a way of understanding artistic writing, structuring a novel whose readability invites the reader to participate in the narrative they are reading. Whether due to its remarkable ability to observe and describe, its calm inventiveness, or its admirable economy of narrative, it is a novel that complements the art of good writing.” Regarding Marco Pacheco, who was awarded the Agustina Bessa Luís Revelation Prize, he highlighted that the winning work, “The Promised War”, “is a novel that, based on the innovative business and social action of Francisco Grandella, builds a story family and personal of great human reach”.

Regarding the winner of the Vasco Graça Moura Prize, the President of the Jury emphasized: “With extraordinary coherence, Graça Morais brings us in her work a permanent dedication to others, to traditions and to nature. And it is the wonderful kingdom of Torga that is the great raw material. As José-Augusto França stated, given the unprecedented values of religion and myth, the artist’s painting is strong and dry. There is a special originality, which results from the confrontation with the harshness of the environment, sometimes harsh, sometimes serene, sometimes lyrical, sometimes dramatic, earth and light. She is the woman who expresses herself, in solidarity with other women, courageously committed to a constant call for dignity.”

In turn, Graça Morais said: “I thank the people and institutions of my country who continue to support and reward artists and writers who struggle with so many difficulties, in a world that is increasingly opposed to creativity and culture. Life, man and creativity continue to be a mystery. We need to fight against ignorance and evil.”

With a short intervention, Teresa Veiga, winner of the Fernando Namora Prize, stated: “It is an honour to receive this prize named after one of the most notable writers of her generation”. And she emphasized, “I’m just a storyteller who writes for personal pleasure.”

Marco Pacheco, on the other hand, explained that his work “The Promised War”, “has an autobiographical part, a part that has to do with me and with a particularly complicated and intense time in my life, which was adolescence. Since I started experimenting with fiction texts, this has always been the topic that interested me. I wanted to use writing to better understand what happens in the brain when it begins to understand the world and, at the same time, begins to distrust it.”

At the opening of the ceremony, the President of Estoril Sol, Mário Assis Ferreira, said: “As far as Culture is concerned, Estoril Sol has long since chosen its path, by launching, on a regular basis, a range of Literary Awards, covering both novelists renowned as revelations, alongside a multidisciplinary activity that includes Performing Arts, Music, Visual Arts or “Egoísta”, this magazine that has gained a unique status as a cult publication. With these parchments − that frame our pride as a Company, and despite the many adversities and challenges that have come our way, Estoril Sol has always felt this cultural investment has been rewarded, as evidenced by the ceremony that brings us together in this Auditorium.”

“The commitment to Culture and Performing Arts continues to guide Estoril Sol, an original concept that we are proud of and that made a difference, compared to what was the practice followed in this segment of activity. From the Literary Awards to the Art Gallery and Visual Arts − or the magazine “Egoísta”, deserving of a vast list of national and international awards −, the range of cultural initiatives that Estoril Sol undertakes, as a parent company, is impressive. of your conceptual model. Therefore, the promotion of Culture is a “highlight” that has been with us for a long time and to which we want to remain faithful”, concluded Mário Assis Ferreira.
