The Casino Estoril Auditorium sold out for the premiere of the musical comedy “Company,” directed by and starring Henrique Feist. The Stephen Sondheim musical, with a libretto by George Furth, will be performed again Thursday through Saturday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Many prominent figures, particularly from the entertainment and media industries, were present at the Casino Estoril to see Artfeist’s new musical comedy.
It is in the urgent pulse of New York in the 1970s, in the noise, in the lack of time for everything, that the action unfolds – the challenge of maintaining relationships in an increasingly depersonalised society. Is it better to live single or with a partner? That’s the question Robert… or Bobby… asks himself at the surprise party thrown by his best friends for his fiftieth birthday. Bobby has always been a lonely bachelor, surrounded by his “good and crazy” friends—who are married—but until now, he’s never taken the plunge.
Fear of commitment? Fear of love? Is it too late to find happiness? Do we gain or lose when we decide to share our lives with someone? Do we stop being who we are and become someone else? Does “I” become “we”? We can’t escape time, the passing of the years, or the sad feeling that overwhelms us when we realise that our self-imposed loneliness is nothing more than the fear of commitment.
Company premiered on Broadway in 1970 and, for 54 years, was the most nominated musical for Tony Awards (Broadway’s Oscar). It has had numerous productions around the world over the years, the most recent being the Spanish version, which ran for two years in Malaga, Madrid, and Barcelona, directed by and starring António Banderas. This musical now comes to Portugal, produced by Henrique Feist, with special permission from Music Theatre International.
