Now available on all digital platforms, ‘Single Duplo’ marks the debut of the new band of Maria Antónia Mendes, Carlos Guerreiro, Luís J Martins, Pedro da Silva Martins, Nuno Prata and Sérgio Nascimento.
“Corridinho Português” and “Político Antropógão” mark the debut of Cara de Espelho. This new Portuguese popular music project brings together some of the most relevant and creative names in national music in recent years, coming from projects such as Deolinda, Ornatos Violeta, Gaiteiros of Lisbon, A Naifa, and Humans, among others.
The project is based on the words and compositions of Pedro da Silva Martins (author and composer of Deolinda, Ana Moura, António Zambujo, Lena d ́Água), which are associated with the constructions of instruments by Carlos Guerreiro (Gaiteiros de Lisboa, José Afonso, Fausto, GAC), the bass of Nuno Prata (Ornatos Violeta), the guitars of Luís J Martins (Deolinda, António Zambujo, Cristina Branco) and the percussions of Sérgio Nascimento (Sérgio Godinho, David Fonseca, Humans, Deolinda) to serve the voice deep, engaging and unmistakable by Maria Antónia Mendes (A Naifa, Señoritas).
Serving as a gateway to the group’s sound, the two debut singles reveal a sonic and poetic identity indebted to the richness of popular and traditional Portuguese music, the critical understanding of its poets and singer-songwriters, but with eyes set on a future that demands renewal. , intervention and commitment to the world.
“Corridinho Português” is a recreation of traditional musical identity redefined with modern arrangements and sharp lyrics, which is also an interventionist commentary in a world populated by religious, political, identity or ethnic divisions. If diversity is the richness that constitutes us, “how about getting the guys together in a good way / for a run around Lisbon / back and forth and riding together”? As Zeca reminded us, we really need to warn and encourage people. Especially in this hostile time where it is sadder “who gets to watch dancing”.
“Político Antropófago” reveals another facet of the project’s identity, more sombre and nebulous, and which in lesser tones tells us about this scavenging creature that “nails, flesh, skin and bone / sinks its thirsty tooth into its neck”. Keep your eyes open to this character of amazement, with a greedy fury fueled by TV where “in the royal court they want blood, they ask for blood”. We return to Zeca that there is little caution for these hungry creatures that “eat everything and leave nothing”.
The videos for “Corridinho Português” and “Político Antropógão”, written and coordinated by director Joana Brandão, with composition, editing and graphics by Maria Inês Carrola and Ricardo Madeira, bring to life these two sides of Cara de Espelho. “Corridinho Português”, through the editing of several images collected by photographer Rui Palha, accentuates the diversity and collage of faces, bodies, expressions and movements that illustrate and reinforce the diversity that forms us as a community and that the music and lyrics speak about.
The case of “Político Antropófago” represents the spectacularization of new and old populisms and the way in which they seek to make us spectators in the face of necro-politics trivialized by media power and its representations. Two different proposals, but they share the same language and represent the first traces of the identity of this new project.
With the debut of the two singles, Cara de Espelho anticipates the beginning of a creative journey that will lead them to the release of their debut album, scheduled for January 2024 and the first live performances of the project, scheduled for the beginning of that same year.
