Premiere in London of the concerto for accordion and orchestra by Luís Tinoco, with accordionist João Barradas

March 13th in London with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Edward Gardner

Composer Luís Tinoco and accordionist João Barradas will present the Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra in London, in an exclusive international premiere, on March 13th, at 6:30 pm.

The concert will take place at the Southbank Center and will feature the prestigious London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Edward Gardner.

According to Luís Tinoco, “This concert, written in response to a joint commission from the Centro Cultural de Belém and Casa da Música, is divided into two movements, each approximately ten minutes long. In the first, calm and meditative, varied colours and characteristic registers of the solo instrument are presented, in dialogue with the orchestra in a sequence of events that explore both intimate and camaraderie moments as well as dense orchestral textures of greater intensity. A transition/coda follows that opens the second movement, introducing motifs and gestures that give rise to energetic and pulsating music that challenges the soloist to reveal his virtuosity, expressiveness, also, physical resistance. Sometimes, a concerto is born from the desire to write for a particular instrument, and from the affinity and familiarity that a composer may have with its sounds. It can also be born from the admiration nurtured by performers with whom one wants to collaborate in the creation of a new score. This concert is the result of both scenarios, seeking to respond to my curiosity about the very particular potential of the accordion and, simultaneously, offering me the opportunity to write for a musician whom I admire so much and who I consider to have extraordinary qualities.”

It is worth noting this month that the virtuoso accordionist João Barradas and conductor Pedro Amaral will present the Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra by Luís Tinoco, with the Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, at the Legislative Assembly (Funchal), on February 24th, at 6 pm.

On the 4th of October, João Barradas takes the stage at Casa da Música, to, this time, end the tour culminating with the recording that will later be released on disc, in a concert with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, under directed by conductor Joana Carneiro.
