“Fénix”, the musical that reveals real stories of drug addiction
is back on the national stage
Farol ATT – Association for the Treatment of Drug Addictions will put on a musical theater show, entitled “Fénix”, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Lisbon City Council, and Porto, and with the High Sponsorship of the President of the Republic.
Created by Matilde Trocado and Artur Guimarães, “Fénix” is based entirely on real stories of addiction, survival, relapse, and recovery. “Concrete life stories that prove recovery is possible. It is possible to rise from the ashes. In addition to the scars, failures, mistakes we make, and the times we fall, it is always possible to start over”, reveals the association.
The cast has 12 professional actors, who give life to non-fictional characters. The objective is to be able to publicize the work of ATT, as well as its future facilities, a Treatment Center of reference at the European level.

About Farol ATT
ATT is an IPSS, with the Public Utility Statute, which has existed since 1991, with the mission of recovering people with problems of addiction to drugs, alcohol, and gambling, among others, and helping their families. It came about because a group of people, seeing their children and friends with their lives destroyed, decided to set up a fund to finance treatments outside Portugal through an innovative treatment model known as the “Minisota model”. In view of the success of these treatments, they decided that it would be of the utmost importance to have a treatment center in Portugal with this same model and that many more people could be treated for their addiction problems, regardless of their economic and social status. In 1995, the O FAROL treatment center was born. Since that date, we have been installed at Quinta das Ameias in Sintra for over 25 years.
Over the past twenty-five years, FAROL ATT has received more than three thousand people with alcohol, drug and gambling addiction problems. Thanks to FAROL ATT, most of these people “found themselves” and became responsible, productive, respected, and fully integrated members of society. We live off the contributions of our benefactors.
According to WHO, addiction is a disease. It is not a choice and it is not voluntary. It is a mental disorder with very varied manifestations that goes beyond mere physical dependence on a substance. Addiction is recognized as one of the most serious health problems affecting our society.
Last year ATT celebrated its 30th anniversary and the Treatment Center O Farol 25th, and that is why we decided to put on a great musical theater show, 100% professional, which has the name Fénix, the rebirth from the ashes.
