Famous for its nine-kilometre sandy beach, the smallest inhabited island in the Madeira Archipelago is just an hour and a half flight from Lisbon, in the far southwest of Europe, 500 km from the African coast and 1000 km from the European mainland. This island has several diving spots, including two artificial wrecks with maximum depths of 30 meters, and several natural sports with depths of up to 25 meters, with diverse and very abundant underwater fauna and flora.

Diving is seen by the government as one of the main sporting activities to be developed on the island, where there is a clear commitment from all government bodies to create conditions for practising this sport all year round, where the sea has an average annual temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
