Joana Sá performs at TAGV in Coimbra

co-organization between JACC and TAGV

On March 28th at 9:30 pm, it will be Coimbra’s turn to host the project Corpo-escuta / A body as listening by the pianist, improviser and composer, Joana Sá.

A body as listening – resonant cartography of music (im)materialities is the Portuguese pianist’s most complete project: composed of a book, a conference performance, a virtual installation and, finally, an album released in January 2024, by Clean Feed Records.

After Culturgest in Lisbon and gnration in Braga, in January this year, the show now arrives in Coimbra, taking to the stage at Teatro Académico Gil Vicente in Coimbra, in a partnership between it and JACC.

Joana Sá brings to the stage Corpo-escuta / A body as listening, the new solo for piano and electronics, and the most recent fragment of a much broader project. A body as listening – resonant cartography of music (im)materialities is a type of work that we don’t come across very often. This project unfolds in several different formats that, despite being autonomous, complement and enrich each other.

A book, published by Sistema Solar/Teatro Praga, a virtual installation — which can be visited at www.abodyaslistening.com — an album published by Clean Feed and a conference performance are the pieces that make up this project by Joana Sá. Each of these parts is a marker on the path that the pianist began to follow and that seems to guide her until this moment: the show that she now presents in co-creation with Daniel C. Neves (visual design), Henrique Fernandes (body-listening device) and Teresa Silva (support for the movement).

This show is a co-production of Culturgest, gnration and Jazz ao Centro.

Joana Sá

With work marked by transdisciplinarity, experimentation and the search for different artistic (dis)formats, Joana Sá explores the relationship between the body and listening, as well as resonance and vibration from different perspectives. In his solo career, we find the trilogy composed of Through This Looking Glass (2010/11), Elogio da Desordem (2013) and à Ouvir: o Aberto (2016) — which also served as the theme for his doctorate. In addition to her solo work, Sá is also active in several duos, trios and quintets with artists such as Luís J. Martins, Nuno Aroso, Eduardo Raon, Savina Yannatou or with the dancer and choreographer João dos Santos Martins. She has performed in renowned national and international venues and recorded for Deutschland Funk, SWR2 Südwestrundfunk 2 and Antena 2. With Luís J Martins she founded and is the artistic director of à Listen, a collective of artistic creation and interdisciplinary reflection developed in and with communities da Serra da Estrela, scientific partners, civic movements and collaborators from different areas with which it has developed several important projects since 2020.
