Theater play 1984 by George Orwell premieres in Aveiro

The work, written by two award-winning British playwrights, is a stage adaptation of the dystopian literary classic by George Orwell. A production by the company Artistas Unidos integrated into the programming of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture.
Big Brother will be at Teatro Aveirense with the show 1984 by George Orwell. It is on the next day, November 9, at 9:30 PM, that the company Artistas Unidos premieres in Aveiro, as part of the programming of the Portuguese Capital of Culture, the adaptation by the Britons Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan of this historical novel for the theatre.
First staged in 2013 in the United Kingdom, the play 1984 by George Orwell revisits the story of a dystopian world where everyone is watched and watches each other, where the truth is brutally crushed, and where everyone must obey the Party leader who sees and knows everything, Big Brother. It is in this reality that Winston Smith, the main character of Orwell’s work, dares to dream of a free world.
The play by Icke and Macmillan – both playwrights and directors who have won several awards, including the UK Theatre Award for Best Direction for 1984 by George Orwell – centres the narrative on a group of people from the year 2050 reading Winston Smith’s secret diary. During the reading, these citizens kept their cell phones in a box to avoid being hacked and discussed privately whether Smith was a real person and if the events he described happened. A multimedia version – with video – that tests both the audience’s tolerance for violence and their knowledge of the original text.
The staging of 1984 by George Orwell by Artistas Unidos is directed by Pedro Carraca and features Ana Castro, Carolina Salles, Gonçalo Carvalho, Inês Pereira, Paulo Pinto, Raquel Montenegro, and Tiago Matias in the cast.
The play will have a session for school audiences on November 8, also at Teatro Aveirense.
