Portugal organizes 1st festival inspired by ‘planetary health diet’
For the first time, the APCOI – Portuguese Association Against Child Obesity organizes the ‘Festival Heroes da Fruta’, a pioneering event in the world inspired by the Planetary Health Diet to motivate kids and adults to eat healthier ways to fight obesity and climate change.
“What we eat has a huge impact on our health and an even greater footprint for our planet.” According to the FAO, current food production consumes 70% of the available drinking water on the planet and contributes to global warming through emissions while over 4 billion people worldwide die from obesity-related causes each year, and 2 billion suffer from diseases associated with overweight, “explains Mário Silva, president and founder of APCOI.
According to the Planetary Health Diet report published by a commission of 37 international scientists, the main global action to take to defend human health and save the planet is to substantially increase the daily intake of fruits, vegetables and other foods of plant origin, for this is the food category with the greatest nutritional benefits in disease prevention and whose production is more ecological.
To encourage children and their families to adopt a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, APCOI has invited a battalion of the famous movie, television and comic book superheroes to take on the role of mentors who, in addition to the usual self- will also share countless tips and positive examples with the festival audience.
Spiderman, Batman and Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Zorro, Power Rangers, Catwoman, Ironman, Flash, Captain America, Thor ‘,’ Catnoir ‘and’ Ladybug ‘are some of the names already confirmed for the 1st edition of the’ Heroes of the Fruit Festival ‘which promises to be an unforgettable party for the whole family, in which children will be able to experience mini superheroes and test your superpowers live through dozens of inflatables, games and other amusements. The event also proposes an unprecedented program that will bring together live mascots, pedagogical workshops, health screenings, healthy food show cooking and a stage with great names in Portuguese music for children: Hip Hop Ip & Op and, of course, the ‘super’ Grandpa Cantigas!
Thousands of children from all regions of the country – and their parents, relatives and teachers – are expected, since this is also the first national meeting of the more than five thousand schools and 350 thousand students who since 2011 have already participated in the school initiative health education ‘Heroes of the Fruit – Healthy School Snack’.
