Portugal WOWtêntico
six days celebrating what is most authentic in Portugal
From the 10th to the 15th of August, WOW will celebrate the authentic country, highlighting culture, arts and crafts, food, and music and promoting a series of workshops and children’s workshops.
The vast majority of programming takes place inside the WOW museums, which gain an extra life, but there are outdoor activities, such as the closing concert with Rita Rocha.
WOW will promote from the 10th to the 15th of August the “Portugal WOWtêntico”. On each day of the event, a WOW museum will be highlighted, always with a thematic program, which will fill the day with activities. To participate, just buy the ticket for the museum in question and this will entitle you to enter and leave the museum for the whole day.
On the 10th of August, the highlight is the Wine Museum, with the theme “A Portuguese house, for sure”, where there is always “bread and wine on the table”, as Amália Rodrigues sang. During the day, throughout the museum, there will be a series of historical re-enactments, children’s activities, and workshops for adults. It will be possible to taste the gastronomy and learn more about the customs. In the late afternoon, at 7 pm, comedian Joel Ricardo Santos performs in the auditorium on the second floor of the museum.
On the 11th, the Cork Museum is the protagonist. Under the theme “Portugal Dourado”, on this day the entire program will take us on a journey to the Alentejo plains. There will be bread and olive oil tastings, wool workshops, and regional music. The day at the museum ends at 7 pm with a party that is an ode to Alentejo nectars. To participate, once again, just have the museum ticket.
On the 12th of August, Saturday, there is “Festa na Aldeia” inside the Pink Palace. The idea is to relive the spirit, rhythms, and flavors of summer festivities in the village, all within a museum. There is regional Minho music throughout the day, several workshops, the game of mesh, wine tasting, and a fado show at 7 pm.
On the 13th, the Chocolate Museum is the highlight of the “Portugal WOWtentic”, revealing how chocolate occupies a place in celebrations and on the Portuguese table. There will be a theatre, family games, workshops, and gastronomic demonstrations about cocoa and chocolate.
On Monday, the 14th, The Bridge Collection, the archaeological museum comprising more than 2000 artifacts used by different civilizations over 9000 years, is the highlight. We are therefore going to immerse ourselves in world history and toast with traditional Portuguese drinks. Health! Among the programming, there are challenges for the youngest and drinking games for the “older”. Among the musical moments, there will be harp and Greco-Roman music.
The last day of the festival is celebrated on the 15th of August. The Porto Region Museum is the highlight and, therefore, the essence of being a “Brave Portuguese” will be explored throughout the day: from the historical recreations that will enliven the museum, to the tasting of spices that we brought on our maritime expeditions, to wood carving, brushing, and tile painting workshops.
“Portugal WOWtêntico” ends with a closing concert, in the garden of the VP restaurant, with the revelation artist of The Voice Kids 2021, Rita Rocha. To attend, simply present the Porto Region Museum ticket for that day. Another possibility is to buy the general ticket for the event, costing €45, which will give you entry to the six museums during the six days of the event, allowing you to enjoy the entire program.
During the six days of the event, there will also be a gastronomy fair at Lemon Plaza, where some local traders will present the best traditional Portuguese flavors.
Collective Exhibition at WOW Gallery: art in the world of wine
During “Portugal WOWtêntico”, the Gallery located in the main square of WOW will host a group exhibition on the theme of wine. For the show, the talent of five artists from different areas joined together: Gilberto Gaspar, visual artist; Cláudia Marina Telheiro, ceramist; Pedro Sadio, photographer; Rita Costa, visual artist; and Ivone Gaipi, sculptor.
Gilberto Gaspar presents his “Vinharelas”: watercolors painted with red, white, or Moscatel wine. Cláudia Marina Telheiro brings the Douro terraces and their “patchwork quilts”, with her work “Paisagens D’Ouro”, duly inspired by her Trás-os-Montes roots and the cobalt blue of the tiles of the 18th century. Pedro Sadio reveals “Wine in Portugal” as a result of 10 years of research and inspiration in the geographical markings of Portuguese wine regions. Rita Costa gives shape to the harvest, in an approach that emphasizes the women and men who work in the Douro, that “landscape blessed by Nature”. Ivone Gaipi participates with “Vinha em corpo”, a representation of Portugal. Entry to the exhibition is free.
