Chullage is Prétu at TMJB

PRÉTU is the alter ego of Chullage/Xullaji, whose first sonic explorations date back to 2019 and culminated in the 2023 album Xei di kor, already classified as “one of the great monuments of national hip hop” and “one of the albums of the year for the vast majority of national publications” (gnration).

For Chullage himself, it’s about the idea of ​​“deepening a political punchline within an aesthetic object,” whose agent—Prétu—he defines as “an Afronaut travelling in a sampledelic dimension.” In Prétu, there is no history, no progress, no time, as all of this is part of the “schedule that white ideology calls history.” There is only intuition, defined as “the receiver of interstellar messages on Prétu’s spaceship,” a ship nicknamed the Unidentified Sonic Object, within which stardust and cosmic rain are transmuted into music.

We are therefore faced with the construction of a novel cosmology and cosmogony, which some have called “Afrosurrealism” and “Afrofuturism.” A journey without a map, to which only “travellers who need no ground” and who wish to “escape the imperial, predictable, and monitored metaverse” are admitted. Music “blazes a path to another future,” based on a “meticulous sonic tapestry.” PRÉTU sees itself as an agent of change and a guerrilla fighter in the “fight against colonialism and the empire, which, after colonising land and bodies, colonised consciousness with algorithms,” carrying a program that involves “denouncing racist poverty, the persistence of colonial thought, cynical capitalist inequality, and the fascist existence of the world as a social network.”
