The best national surfers are ready for the final stage of the MEO Surf League 2024 and for the ultimate decision regarding the men’s national title. The first call for the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, the 5th and final stage of the MEO Surf League, the top tier of Portuguese surfing, is set for this Friday at 7:30 AM at Supertubos Beach.
With many waves on the horizon, expectations are high for three days of competition that will crown the new men’s national champion, in a two-way battle between Guilherme Ribeiro and Tomás Fernandes, after Teresa Bonvalot won the women’s title in advance.
Teresa Bonvalot, 5x national champion (2014, 2015, 2020, 2022, and 2024)
“I think it will be an interesting and challenging championship. It will be fun to watch the individual struggle between Guilherme Ribeiro and Tomás Fernandes. I share the coach with Guilherme and train with him every day, and this year we travelled together many times. I’ve known Tomás for many years and consider him an incredible surfer. So may the best and most entertaining one win. Let the decision be in the final, and whoever wins shall be champion!”
Carolina Mendes, 2x national champion (2016 and 2017)
“I have great expectations for this stage. I hope to see a very high level of surfing from both title candidates. There will be exciting heats, and it’s nice to see this contest go to the last stage. Both are having a great competitive year. It’s hard to choose who I would like to be champion, given the work both have done. I will cheer for whoever shows more will to win and focus on handling the pressure of the moment. So, may the best one win!”
National champion in 2022 and winner of the last two stages of the MEO Surf League held in Peniche, Guilherme Ribeiro arrives at the decisive stage at the top of the ranking and with the yellow Go Chill jersey. However, Tomás Fernandes, who is seeking his first national title, is just behind in the ranking and both depend only on themselves to reach the crown. Doing the math, the surfer who achieves the best result will finish at the top of the ranking, with the possibility of the calculations being made in a final between the two.
Winners of the Good Petisco Peniche Pro in the last 3 years:

2022 – Guilherme Ribeiro and Maria Salgado
2021 – Afonso Antunes and Francisca Veselko
After the beach of Lagido hosted the best national surfers in recent years, this year the strong swell forecast allows the event to take place at the queen wave of national surfing, at Supertubos beach, where the world’s best surfers compete annually in one of the stages of the World Surf League circuit. With the possibility of tubes appearing during the contest, no one remains indifferent to the setting arranged for the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, which has recently been unanimously chosen by surfers as the stage of the year in the MEO Surf League.
During the first day of the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, the initiative Love the Sea, led by the Jerónimo Martins Group, will count on the participation of about 100 children from schools in the municipality of Peniche in activities aimed at sustainability and the protection of the oceans.
The Jerónimo Martins Group, the sustainability partner of the MEO Surf League, places great importance on the preservation of the oceans and their biodiversity. Since 2016, it has evaluated the conservation status of all traded species, and it is based on this assessment that it updates its sustainable seafood strategy. The analysis considers the extinction risk level of species according to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Due to being classified as a “critically endangered” species and the inability to ensure aquaculture for its entire life cycle, European eel is not available for sale in the Group’s stores.
