Jo Quail, a virtuoso composer and cellist, opened God is an Astronaut’s concert at LAV-Lisboa ao Vivo with her electric cello, a technical mastery that combines looping and effects for a concert of contemporary instrumental music that transcends genres.

Jo Quail constructs complex and atmospheric soundscapes, combining elements ranging from contemporary classical and avant-garde to post-rock, metal, and electronica.

His live looping technique allows him to create rich, orchestral, and sometimes sonically heavy textures (with distortion), all generated solely by his cello on stage.

Jo Quail combines influences that include classical composers such as Debussy and Pärt, as well as progressive and metal artists such as Tool and Trent Reznor. His “cinematic” music is intense and powerful.

Her versatility has led her to collaborate with artists across genres, such as MONO, Myrkur, Enslaved, and Caspian, and to perform at festivals ranging from contemporary classical to major metal festivals like Hellfest.

Since beginning her solo career in 2010, Jo Quail has released several albums, demonstrating her technical and compositional progression. Caldera (2014), Five Incantations (2016), Exsolve (2018), The Cartographer (2022), and Notan (2025) showcase the growth of her music and career.
