In Sem Medo, Teresa Coutinho is inspired by Simão Sem Medo, the book by Miguel Granja, and the classic by José Gomes Ferreira, Aventuras de João Sem Medo. In this text by Teresa Coutinho, Simone, a brave girl, takes us on a deep journey through her dreamlike universe, in search of someone she lost and her place in the world. Like Lewis Carroll’s Alice, Simone also enters through the mirror, but in search of her Grandmother, on an internal journey in which she is confronted with the experience of mourning, with the specificity of the Other and what is, after all, courage and bravery. The show returns us to a plural world, with a strong video component, allowing us to expand the limits of physical space and, therefore, take us to many of these places visited by the character and the obstacles she encounters, in her «journey of heroin”. The contagious courage of the Child is measured by her openness to the unknown, reminding us that «not to be afraid is to be able to listen and recognize the other».
About the show
The creation of Sem Medo is an opportunity to think about the child’s relationship with fear. In this show, the possibility of self-questioning and listening to the Other are pillars of Simone’s courage and courage. The experience of mourning is the starting point for an internal journey that will elucidate the character about the importance of inheritance and influence in the construction of identity and self-esteem.
Bravery is not, in Sem Medo, the absence of fear, but the exercise of otherness and persistence. Thanks to her crossing, Simone realizes that being true to ourselves, and fulfilling ourselves is a way of honoring those who loved us and believed in us. Keeping them alive means not only remembering them but pursuing our dreams with the teachings they gave us.
