slowthai releases new album, “UGLY”

slowthai’s third studio album, “UGLY”, hits stores and digital platforms today. After its debut album, “Nothing Great About Britain” (nominated for a Mercury Music Prize), and sophomore album, “TYRON”, “UGLY” looks set to once again turn the narrative around on one of music’s most exciting talents. from the UK.

Produced by Dan Carey in his south London home studio alongside Kwes Darko with further production work from Zach Nahome and Sega Bodega, “UGLY (u gotta love yourself)” embodies slowthai’s love of rock, indie, and punk. to the fore and features a fluid mix of musicians including Ethan P. Flynn, Shygirl, Taylor Skye (of Jockstrap), Jacob Bugden (guitarist of Beabadoobee), drummer Liam Toon and friends Fontaines D.C.

Foreshadowed by the singles “Selfish” and “Feel Good” (see behind-the-scenes video) – both released with contrasting but equally moving videos, displaying once again slowthai’s versatility both musically and creatively – anyone would be something of a prophet if could guess this man’s next move. slowthai also filmed visualizers/videos for each song on the album – see the visual playlist.

Breaking apart and airing your anxieties from the past two years is key to this slowthai phase. The “UGLY” album cover is appropriately up close and personal, with the camera zooming in on the left side of her face. The album title – an acronym for U Gotta Love Yourself – is tattooed below the eye. Musically, this new album may show a side of the rapper that people haven’t heard before, but slowthai sees it as the most complete picture yet. “The first album was the sound I came from and everything I thought I knew,” he says. “The second album is what was relevant to me at that moment, the present. And this album is completely me – about how I feel and what I want to be… it’s all I’ve been doing.”

“It doesn’t matter what or who people think you are, you just need to be true and respect yourself. I have a tattoo saying ‘UGLY’ on my face because it’s a reminder to love myself instead of constantly putting myself down or feeling like people’s impressions of me should determine who I am as a person.”
