The Sound Archive of the Historic Center of Coimbra (asCHC) is a project that was born in 2013, shortly after Jazz ao Centro Clube found a home in Salão Brazil. Directed by sound landscaper Luís Antero, asCHC is based on the principle that soundscapes are important for understanding how sound characterizes a space or place. Questions like “What sounds does our city embody? How many of them have already disappeared irretrievably? What can we learn about the specificity of a city’s communities (spatial communities, neighbourhoods, professional communities, etc.) through the sound dimension?” have been at the heart of the Archive’s work. As of 2016, asCHC became available to the public for artistic, educational and recreational exploration.
In this residency, musicians João Hasselberg, Rui Maia and Pedro Melo Alves explore the Sound Archive of the Historic Center of Coimbra to create a show based on the sounds of the city.

About Dar a Ouvir
Dar a Ouvir is a project developed by the Jazz ao Centro Educational Service, in co-organization with Convento São Francisco / Municipality of Coimbra.
The project was born from an invitation from the JACC to the sound landscaper Luís Antero, in order to create the Sound Archive of the Historic Center of Coimbra (ASCHC), in 2013, shortly after Jazz ao Centro Clube had found a home in Brazil Hall.
ASCHC assumes that soundscapes are important for understanding how sound characterizes a space or place. Questions like “What sounds does our city incorporate? How many of them have already disappeared irretrievably? What can we learn about the specificity of a city’s communities (spatial communities, neighbourhoods, professional communities, etc.) through the sound dimension?” have been at the centre of the Sound Archive’s work.
In 2016, with the interactive device MS01 (Sound Furniture), ASCHC became available to the public for artistic, educational and recreational exploration. The result of a partnership between Jazz ao Centro Clube and the Computational Design and Visualization Lab. from the Cognitive and Media Systems Group, from the Center for Informatics and Systems at the University of Coimbra, MS01 was the basis for the appearance, in 2017, of Dar a Ouvir.
In the context of Dar a Ouvir, ASCHC has been fundamental in making the city of Coimbra known from the auditory culture, seeking to raise awareness of listening and sound as a possibility of discovery and knowledge, as a social and creative object, in a process in which the senses complement each other.
