Next Saturday, January 13th, at 5 pm at UCCLA, located at Avenida da India, 110, 1300-300 Lisboa (Belém, in front of the Electricity Museum and MAAT).

In the year that precedes the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Cape Verde’s Independence and the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, and at the same time, there are signs here and there of speeches and movements corroding values that took a lot to achieve. , it is worth remembering and loudly affirming the importance of Freedom and Democracy, banishing ghosts that want to see the world return to the past. It is important at all times to assume as an essential value of our civilization that any problems that affect people and countries can only be resolved within freedom and democracy, and never outside them! This is the reason for our celebration!
In artists, in their voices and gestures, we recognize the wings of freedom and the roots of full democracy, which are the seeds of progress in Cape Verde. These are the reasons that have always united Cape Verdeans and unified Cape Verde as a free and democratic nation. A country that, against natural and even human adversities, persists and resists the hardships of the times, opening paths for political, social and cultural consolidation. It’s a joint effort, it’s everyone’s work, it will be a fruit harvested by everyone.
About January 13th – Freedom and Democracy Day:
The 13th of January is consecrated by the Law of the National Assembly as Freedom and Democracy Day, precisely because that is the day, in 1991, on which the first free and democratic elections were held, within the framework of a multi-party system. Freedom and democracy in Cape Verde, a country in the West African region, have constituted one of its main assets and a factor in its international prestige and credibility. Democracy and freedom in Cape Verde are favoured by a context of great political stability. Suffice it to say that Cape Verde has never known a single early election, with all holders of sovereign bodies having fully fulfilled their mandates.
