Barbara Timo in the World Judo semi-finals

Portugal’s Barbara Timo has qualified today for the semi-finals of the 70-kg World Judo Championships in Tokyo and will play a place in the final against European champion Margaux Pinot.

The Brazilian-born and naturalized Portuguese judoka in January started the competition with two ippon triumphs against Mongolian Enkhchimeg Tserendulam and Belgian Roxane Taeymans after 2.50 and 1.09 minutes, respectively.

This was followed by the waza-ari triumph over Japan’s Chizuru Arai, who defended the world title won in 2017 and 2018, and the quarter-final clash against Dutch champion Sanne van Dijke in 2017 and current runner-up, Timo won at the ‘golden point’ after 6.20 minutes.

The Benfica judoka, who has already secured at least the silver medal in the World Championships, will face Margaux Pinot, who this year won the European scepter of the category after being runner-up in the -63 kg category in 2017.

World Judo Championships runs until Sunday in the Japanese capital.

On Friday, the Portuguese team will be represented by Yahima Ramirez and Patrícia Sampaio, both at -78 kg), and Jorge Fonseca, who starts the competition of -100 kg with the head of the series.
