Margareth Menezes live at LAV

October 20th at LAV – Lisboa ao Vivo

With a career that spans several decades and has conquered different generations, the award-winning singer from Bahia and current Minister of Culture of Brazil has a scheduled meeting with the public in an exclusive show on national soil.

One of the greatest representatives of Bahian music and a leading figure of Brazilian Afropop, Margareth Menezes, comes to Portugal for a unique show.

From her humble beginnings in the capital of the state of Bahia, Salvador, to her recent appointment by the current president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, as Minister of Culture in his cabinet, the artist who will perform at LAV – Lisboa ao Vivo on October 20th has travelled a long path.

After a European tour in the summer of 2024, which included the Festival Músicas do Mundo in Sines, and in which she premiered on the continent the original compositions from her latest album, Autêntica (2019), nominated for a Latin Grammy, Menezes is preparing to also captivate the audience with the interpretation of themes by some of the Brazilian authors who inspired her and to recall several hits from a valuable career, such as “Faraó (Divindade do Egito)”, a carnival anthem from the 80s that has now been celebrated again regarding her position as head of the Ministry of Culture.

Between the fast rhythms of Bahian axé, which sustain a thunderous voice, and the slower moments, revealing a wild sensuality, Margareth Menezes’ name is eternally linked to other personalities of Bahian descent, from Gilberto Gil to Maria Bethânia, from Caetano Veloso to Daniela Mercury. Her resume includes many awards and tributes from around the world.

In 1990, she achieved global fame with the LP Elegibo, produced by David Byrne of Talking Heads, which reached number one on the Billboard World Music charts. It was the American musician himself who invited her to open a tour a year before this work, making her the first artist to take samba-reggae, a traditional style from Bahia, outside of Brazil: “a language that comes from the Afro [carnival] blocks, which mixed the rhythms of the African key with the contemporary music of that time – a bit of tropicália, a bit of Latin rhythm – with a powerful impact”, she explained to the British magazine Songlines.

The composer also created the Estrela do Mar label, a chapter that brought her a new level of popularity in her home country, with Afropopbrasileiro (2001), an album whose title expresses her musical identity.

Released in early 2025, her latest single, “Ramalhete de Flor”, is clear proof of how traditional and contemporary styles define the singer’s artistic career in an exemplary way.

Equally recognised by the public through television and the big screen, Margareth Menezes will be performing at LAV, in Lisbon, on October 20th.

Tickets cost €30 and are now available at Ticketline.
