They met in Las Vegas, at the Latin Grammy Awards ceremony, in 2021, and both present in the nominee category – Sara Correia in the Best Roots Music Album in the Portuguese Language, and Israel Fernández in the Best Flamenco Album.
Since then, a collaboration between those who are currently the two most powerful and magnetic voices of Fado and Flamenco began to develop. And so “Bocas do Mundo” was born.
“Being able to be on this project is a privilege. It was lucky to be able to join these two voices and these two hearts”, confessed Josemi Carmona, the historic Spanish musician, and producer who, linked to Ketama, helped to “democratize” flamenco all over the world. In Madrid, when he received the two artists to record the song, at the Musigrama studios, he began to design the orchestrated theme in Portuguese and Spanish, with lyrics and music by Diogo Clemente, Sara Correia’s usual artistic director.
“Together, Portugal and Spain, are this arabesque and passionate place in the world, Iberia. Together, Sara Correia and Israel Fernandez personify that fire, they are the greatest representatives of each of their original songs, fado, and flamenco, they bring pain and joy in their voices and soul, and for that reason, it was evident to compose the two languages the story of a love that was barely finished and perpetuated despite the end, the distance and the mouths of the world”, comments Diogo Clemente, adding: “Love has never been so well delivered.”
Used to being called upon to collaborate with other artists, sometimes exploring other musical universes, neither Sara Correia nor Israel Fernández ever leaves aside their essence, fado singer and flamenco, respectively. To name a few, Sara has already joined the likes of Pedro Abrunhosa, Stereossauro, Bateu Matou, and António Zambujo. Many others claim to be fans of her voice and dedication to Fado, such as Carolina Deslandes, Capicua, or Dino d’Santiago. In turn, Israel Fernandez has as declared fans names like CTangana, Rosalía, Najwa Nimri, Miguel Poveda, Palomo Spain, and Pablo Alborán.
They never crossed paths on stage, despite having already performed in the same room, as happened at the Tivoli BBVA, in Lisbon, in the last edition of Womex, for which both were part of the selection of the jury of the biggest World Music fair in the world. Israel Fernández is scheduled to visit Portugal at Primavera Sound Porto, on June 8, and Sara Correia debuts on May 27 in her own name at CCB, in Lisbon, and at Casa da Música, in Porto, on June 17, in what will be their presentation shows for the new album, scheduled to be released in the first half of the year.
