Ana Isabel Castro is the winner of the Coliseu Porto Ageas Young Artists Award – Dance

Dancer and choreographer Ana Isabel Castro is the winner of the second edition of the Coliseu Porto Ageas Young Artists Award – Dance. The award ceremony and presentation took place this Friday, December 15th, at 6 pm, at Coliseu Porto Ageas.

Born in Póvoa de Varzim, Ana Isabel Castro (1994) has a degree from the Escola Superior de Dança in Lisbon and attended the FAICC – Advanced Training in Interpretation and Choreographic Creation at Companhia Instable. As an ERASMUS fellow at MUK in Vienna, she worked with Esther Balfe, Saju Hari and Georg Blaschke.

She has collaborated as a performer with Compagnie 7273, Circolando, Companhia Instable, Kale Companhia de Dança, Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, Joclécio Azevedo and Diogo Oliveira. At DDD 2019, she presented her first creation, Marengo and, in 2021, ICEBERG. She was one of the JAA! — Young Associated Artists of Teatro Municipal do Porto in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons. Pechisbeque is her latest creation.

Aimed at young talents in the circus arts or dance, the Coliseu Porto Ageas Young Artists Award was launched in 2021, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of this historic theatre, in partnership with the Ageas Portugal Group. Annually, and with a value of €5,000, its mission is to promote talents in two artistic areas with a strong impact on the national scene – circus and dance – but which do not always receive the public recognition they deserve. It covers interpreters, choreographers, set designers, producers, and programmers, among other professionals linked to this area, up to 30 years of age.

The jury for the Dance category was made up of six relevant names in this artistic area: Ana Borralho, João Galante, Max Oliveira, Miguel Ramalho, Olga Roriz and Susana Otero.

“It is with great happiness that I receive this first award, which I believe is an encouragement and recognition for young Portuguese creators”, says Ana Isabel Castro. “I think it will make my work reach more people and above all it reinforces the desire to continue. ”

For Miguel Guedes, President of the Coliseu, “Selecting young artists, rewarding them, appears as a goal of the Coliseu. It is never too much to recognize merit”, he emphasizes, remembering that the Prize, despite being a more visible facet of the work done, is also “a corollary of everything we developed throughout the year with so many young people from the most varied arts and disciplines that pass through here.” These awards “are fundamental as epicentres of visibility for people who do, often in an almost invisible way, extraordinary work that just needs to be mentioned, valued, communicated and encouraged. That’s what we do once again this year, rewarding new value, this time in the area of Dance.”

Teresa Thöbe, Head of Brand, Sponsorships and Partnerships at the Ageas Portugal Group states that “the Young Artists Awards represent the Ageas Portugal Group’s dedication to promoting emerging talent and the importance of Culture in people’s lives. Over recent times, the Group has been demonstrating its commitment and commitment in this area and this Award is an example of this. Artistic excellence in dance now combines with the magic of the circus in an event that presents the Christmas Circus session, an exclusive premiere for Ageas Group Guests – Clients, Partners, Mediators and Collaborators – and which has more than 2,000 guests who join the Ageas Portugal Group in disseminating and promoting Culture in Portugal.”

After the Coliseu Porto Ageas Young Artists Award in 2022 was dedicated to circus arts, and in 2023 it was awarded to an artist in the field of Dance, in 2024 it will once again be the turn to distinguish a young circus talent.
